Probably. I use mine in my bathroom for towels and have the shelf for products. It comes with anchors for the wall. I'd think that if you used the anchors, you'd be okay to hang backpacks, so long as they're not too heavy!

No, it comes with dry wall anchors that you can use to support the screws. Simply drill a hole the size of the dry-wall anchor, tap them in with a hammer and either drive the screws into the anchors with a drill or a screw driver.
