[Surnetkids] Ludwig van Beethoven

Dear Reader,

Today’s topic honors the premier of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on May 7, 1824. Bonus trivia fact of the week: Beethoven is buried in Vienna in the same cemetery as my great-grandfather, whose grave site I visited just two weeks ago.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827) is one of the greatest composers in history. His work marked a turning point for composers, who had previously written primarily for religious services, to teach, or to entertain at social functions. But Beethoven’s music was listened to for pleasure. His pioneering work gave musicians a new freedom to express themselves.

Beethoven Haus

The Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, Germany is a museum at Beethoven’s birthplace that “houses a significant Beethoven collection.” The kid section of their educational website includes an interactive slide show all about Beethoven’s life and accomplishments. “Everyone knows that Beethoven was a great composer, but a lesser known fact is that he also taught, both the piano and composition.” To view the slide show, click “Start” below the “Hello Beethoven” subtitle, and choose the British flag for the English language version.

Biography: Ludwig van Beethoven

“Beethoven’s personal life was marked by a struggle against deafness, and some of his most important works were composed during the last 10 years of his life, when he was quite unable to hear. He died at the age of 56.” Biography.com features Beethoven’s biography (of course), which is sprinkled with hyperlinks to related biographies (including Mozart and Napoleon Bonaparte) and includes an interesting Quick Facts graphic.

Classics For Kids: Composers: Ludwig van Beethoven

“Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany. His father, who was a singer, was his first teacher. After a while, even though he was still only a boy, Ludwig became a traveling performer, and soon, he was supporting his family.” Visit Classics for Kids for a short bio about Beethoven, and a couple of audio clips: Symphony No. 8: Movement 2 and Symphony No. 5: First Movement.
