Family Literacy Week in Greater Victoria reminds of the importance of reading

Organizations across Greater Victoria are anticipating Family Literacy Week, a time to raise awareness about the importance of reading.

From Jan. 23 to 30, south Island literacy task groups have come together to highlight activities and services available to children and families and to encourage engagement with books.

“Having a solid foundation in early literacy skills is a critical component for successful brain development. Early literacy development begins in the first three years of a child’s life and supports their future language development, reading, writing and overall learning ability,” Mitra D. Evans, literacy outreach coordinator for the West Shore, said in a release.

Free events include an interactive online event with Sooke author Gloria Snively, featuring an introduction to her books and an exploration of the seashore. The virtual event happens Monday, Jan. 23 from 10 to 11 a.m.

There is also the option to take a story walk at locations around the region. Two are happening Saturday, Jan. 29, including outside the Juan de Fuca library in Colwood from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and at 11 a.m. at Bow/Brodick Park in Saanich.

Booklets to play an I-Spy literacy game are available for pickup during the week during regular hours from the Vancouver Island Regional Public Library’s Sidney/North Saanich branch at 10091 Resthaven Dr.

Story Studio’s Guild of Young Writers presents fantasy author and actor Chris Humphreys, who’ll talk about his work and the challenges and opportunities of creating diverse worlds, in an online chat Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. Participants can RSVP for the Zoom link by emailing info@storystudio.ca.
