Celebrate Juneteenth in Atlanta! In 2023, the federal holiday falls on Monday, June 19th.
Juneteenth marks the very end of slavery in the United States. It commemorates the date of June 19, 1865, when the last African-American slaves held in Confederate states were finally freed by the Union army. Six months later, the Thirteenth Amendment officially made slavery illegal throughout the entire United States. Juneteenth has been observed since 1866.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, with overwhelming support from Congress. It is officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day.
And don’t forget about Father’s Day, which is Sunday, June 18th.
